The septum is a wall made out of bone and cartilage that divides one’s nose into two separate nostrils. A deviated nasal septum arises when this septum is moved to one side of the nose. Deviated nasal septum makes it harder to breathe as one nasal passage is much smaller than the other. To cure deviated nasal septum, a surgical procedure is carried out to straighten the septum known as septoplasty. What is septoplasty surgery?

In a septoplasty surgery, the nasal septum is straightened by trimming, repositioning and replacing cartilage or bone (sometimes both). The procedure is done with either local or general anesthesia. It is commonly performed in adolescents and adults.

Septoplasty is a minor and low-risk procedure. Recovery generally takes a few days and requires an average of a week of rest. Complete recuperation will continue for several months to one year.

Apart from the case of a deviated nasal septum, an ENT specialist may recommend septoplasty to:

  • Remove nasal polyps
  • Cure chronic sinusitis
  • Prevent recurrent nosebleeds
  • Treat other conditions that result in a nasal blockage
