What are adenoids?

Adenoids are lymph nodes or glands located in the nasopharynx region behind the nose and near to the roof of the mouth. Due to its position, adenoids are not comfortably visible through the mouth like tonsils. These glands play an integral part in boosting the immune system by trapping the germs or pathogens that enter one’s body through the mouth or the nose, in an attempt to prevent infections. The swelling up of the adenoids also known as enlarged adenoids may be congenital or caused due to infections and allergies.

Adenoiditis can be diagnosed by getting an X-ray of the nasopharynx done to evaluate the size of the adenoids and to what extent they are blocking the airway. In case of inveterate adenoiditis, the adenoids may have to be removed completely either using the conventional cold instruments or advanced equipment such as the microshaver system or the coblator.
